Lyceum of Trees, Inc. Bylaws

These Bylaws were approved by concensus at the meeting of the Board of Directors on March 16, 2014.

Article I: Name

The name of this organization shall be Lyceum of Trees, Inc., hereinafter known as The Lyceum.

Article II: Scope & Purpose

The Lyceum is founded as a non-denominational Pagan Church. The Lyceum has five primary purposes, as follows:

  • To provide education in Pagan paths to those seeking such knowledge, without requiring commitment to The Lyceum, or to a specific Pagan Path.
  • To provide open, public celebrations for initiates, members and others interested in Pagan worship.
  • To provide education for those seeking to become Pagan Clergy, as defined herein.
  • To provide spiritual services to those following Pagan paths in need of such services.
  • To provide a community for those following a Pagan path.

Article III: Membership

Membership is open to any person eighteen years of age or older. Persons younger than 18 years of age may join; however, the parents or legal guardians of such a person must meet with a member of the Board of Directors.

The Lyceum does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, or sexual preference. However, because The Lyceum is a Pagan religious organization, we reserve the right to deny membership to anyone who supports or engages in activities, which are counter to our goals of our faith.

The Board of Directors has the right to respectfully decline membership to applicants.

Those desiring membership shall be responsible for holding the Statement of Beliefs of The Lyceum and for paying twenty dollars ($20.00) as an annual membership fee.

Levels of membership

Outer Circle

The Outer Circle consists of all who attend public Lyceum rituals, public classes, workshops, or other non-Membership events. Outer Circle members have no responsibility to the Lyceum.

Inner Circle

The Inner Circle consists of those Members who have been initiated into the Lyceum of Trees and are Members in good standing.


Members are those of any Circle who pay the annual membership fee. Each Member has one vote in any Council or membership decision and is considered to be a member in good standing.

There is an annual meeting of the general membership held once each year, at which time all membership fees are due and payable. The election of members of the Board of Directors is held at the annual meeting and an annual report will be submitted.

Article IV: Board of Directors

The officers of The Lyceum shall be as follows:

Steward (President),
Clerical Director,
Communications Director, and
Member(s) at Large.
These officers are the members of the Board of Directors. Additional Members at Large of the Board of Directors may be added as the Board sees fit.


To hold office as a Board member, a member must either

be an initiate of The Lyceum, or;
be working towards becoming an initiate of The Lyceum and receive approval of the Board, and;
be a member in good standing.

Terms of Office

Board members shall hold office for two (2) years subsequent to their election into office. To ensure that the Board shall not lose continuity, board terms will be staggered as follows:

Even years: Steward, Treasurer, Communications Director
Odd years: Secretary, Clerical Director
Any officer elected by the Board may be removed from the Board, with or without cause, following the regular decision-making process.

Duties and Powers

The duties and powers of The Lyceum shall be vested in the Board of Directors who shall be able to do all things necessary or convenient, not inconsistent with law, to further the activities and affairs of the corporation, as laid out in federal law under Section 501 ( c ) 3 of The Internal Revenue Code of 1954, and under applicable law of the State of Oregon.


The Board shall meet monthly at a site announced on The Lyceum web site, or via some other method designed to ensure that the meeting site is public knowledge. Meetings of the Board shall be open to the public.

In the event a member of the Board cannot attend a meeting or carry out assigned duties, the Steward must be notified prior to the meeting and/or a written report should be submitted to the minutes.

Decision Making Process

It is expected that decisions will be achieved by consensus among the members. If this is not achievable, decisions will be made by a 2/3-majority vote.

Article V: Expectations for Member Conduct

The Lyceum is intended to be open to all people of all ages. As such, behavior will be expected to be appropriate for people of all ages. Any person behaving inappropriately may be asked to leave by the person in charge of the activity, or by two members of the Board.

No illegal substances or paraphernalia will be allowed at any activity of The Lyceum.

Individuals may have and consume alcohol at activities of The Lyceum, as long as such possession is allowed by the venue, and that all people consuming alcohol are of legal age. Excessive consumption may be considered grounds for asking a person to leave the activity.

Public nudity will not be allowed at a Lyceum activity, and The Lyceum will sponsor no ritual or workshop rite requiring nudity.

Article VI: Grievance Procedure

Should a Lyceum member have an issue or concern with another member the following procedure shall be used to resolve the problem. The member having the grievance should:

Start with grounding, centering, and trying to see the issue from the other person’s point of view. If this does not resolve the issue, then:
Go to the other person in question and calmly discuss it with them. If this does not resolve the issue, then:

Both parties must find a mutually agreed-upon 3rd party mediator to assist. The 3rd party would ideally be the Clerical Director but anyone other than the Steward may be chosen. If this does not resolve the problem, then:

The issue will be brought before the Board of Directors and the board’s decision will be final.

Article VII: Amendments

Amendments to these by laws may be proposed by any member in good standing and brought before the Board of Directors at a regularly scheduled meeting. The Board of Directors will determine the relevance of the proposal, make any changes or revisions, and may then propose the amendment to the general membership for consideration.

Amendments to the bylaws must be presented to the membership 30 days prior to the call for the vote. Amendments should be passed by a 2/3 majority of those members in attendance.
